Erin and Lucy are latest recruits to company awarded ‘gold’ status for people development

North Tyneside-based, Carney Consultancy, has announced two new additions to its growing team.


Erin Rochford from Denton Burn, Newcastle, joins as a trainee health and safety advisor and Lucy Dean from Tynemouth, joins as a business administrator.


The company is enjoying a strong 2023 and earlier this year, having identified a gap in the market, provided specialist training to three of its staff in areas such as sustainability and environmental awareness and has developed a carbon calculator road map to assist clients in their ambition to achieve a net zero business by 2050.


In-line with managing director, Angela Carney’s commitment to develop and retain talented young people, Carney Consultancy celebrated success at the Generation for Change (G4C) Awards, held in conjunction with Constructing Excellence in the North East, winning gold in the Commitment to Employee Training and Development – SME category.


Most recently, the company went on to win the People Development award at the Constructing Excellence North East Awards 2023.


Established in 2002, Carney Consultancy specialises in construction and engineering, providing health and safety consultancy and training. Team members come from a main contracting and subcontracting background and have worked, as consultants, with some of the North East’s main companies. The firm works on an on-going basis with a variety of small to medium sized builders, specialist sub-contractors and management companies.


Erin, said: “This is my dream job and I was in discussions with Angela and the team for a while when an opportunity became available for me to join as a trainee health and safety advisor.

“A few years prior to this I had my first taste of working life at Carney Consultancy, undertaking a work placement and I know Angela through her work as a committee member of Working Well Together North East, of which I am a member.



“In my role, I am working closely with Sarah James, senior health and safety consultant and Jamie Clark, health and safety advisor, who are passing on their knowledge and expertise.

“The position of a trainee health and safety assistant is very varied and will involve undertaking risk assessments, training in Face Fit testing and conducting accident investigations through to site inspections.


“I am also already booked in to undertake a National Construction Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) at the beginning of August. Personal progression is something the company very much encourages.”


“With experience in admin work, I am a fast learner and I am looking forward to the opportunities that this position offers me.”


Angela Carney, managing director, said: “We want to provide colleagues with clear career progression routes and the opportunity to embrace wider roles within the construction sector that will help support their development.


“If we look at the Carney team, we have a mix of graduates, those who took the apprenticeship option and others that started their careers within the trades and worked their way up. There isn’t a defined path and no one route is the right way.



“I firmly believe that, as a company, we need to spot talent at an early stage by, say, work experience and then offering full time roles at the appropriate time, as we have done with Erin.

“We will continue to champion young people, and we need to look outwards as a sector to add value, so we can highlight the attractive career opportunities.”
